The first and most crucial step in the powder coating process. This includes cleaning and prepping the surface of the item to be coated. Surface preparation typically involves removing any dirt, grease, rust, or old coatings through methods like sandblasting, acid washing, or mechanical abrasion.
In this step, the powder coating material is applied using an electrostatic spray gun. The gun charges the powder particles, which then stick to the grounded surface of the object. The application is uniform and consistent, ensuring full coverage of the object.
After the powder is applied, the item is placed in an oven where it is heated to a specific temperature to cure the powder. This heat melts the powder into a smooth, durable, and hard finish. The curing process typically takes 10 to 20 minutes at a temperature of around 180°C to 200°C (350°F to 400°F).
